How the Kelle Martina portrait evolved

This may be of help to some artists working in watercolour. My basic principle is to work from general to detail. Never to get bogged down in one part at the expense of others. It is very tempting to work up the "interesting bits"-face etc and then get depressed looking at all the unpainted background .
The finished line sketch | Colour sketch to establish tones |
Drawn out on heavy watercolour paper then outlined in thin black. A collection of reference photos is printed out too. | First blocks of colour. Just for now these are kept very general. |
Basic blocking-in continued | Beginnings of detailing |
At last detailing can be started in the face-but not completely until all other parts have been brought to a similarly developed stage |
